NZ competition Rules & Regulations
1. CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Submit a video with your creation by Sunday 30th March, 2025
NZ finalists (4 contestants) will be notified by Friday 4th April, 2025
The NZ Finals event will be held in Auckland on Saturday 12th April, 2025
MONIN Coffee Creativity Cup Asia Pacific Finals held in Malaysia on 9th September, 2025
2. RULES & REGULATIONS
This is a summary and a quick reference of the rules and regulations, more in depth details can be found further in the document.
- Contestants must use 10ml of any MONIN products available in the Asia Pacific area
- Contestants must use at least one shot of espresso coffee (from 30ml +/- 5%)
- Contestants must use espressos extracted from the provided machine and grinder
- Contestants may use the coffee beans provided by the event organizer or bring their own beans
- Contestants must bring all their own ingredients and equipment (ie. Glassware, ingredients, bar tools, barista gear & accessories)
- Homemade ingredients are permitted but may not conflict with any available MONIN products
- Contestants must be 18 years and over (no maximum age limit)
- Contestants must work, at least, part-time in an active hospitality organization, café, bar or restaurant
3. PRIZES
The 1st and 2nd runners up will receive a $100 gift card.
The NZ winner will receive a sponsored trip (flights and accommodation) to the regional Asia Pacific finals held in Malaysia.
- NZ winner must hold relevant visas to be able to travel to Malaysia to attend this event.
- In the event that the winner is unable to attend this event in Malaysia for any reason, it is at the local organiser’s discretion to select the replacement contestant to represent NZ in the finals in Malaysia.
The top six winners from the Asia Pacific finals will win a sponsored farm tour and coffee experience in Asia.
4. VIDEO SUBMISSION
- Video entries close at 5pm on Sunday 30th March, 2025.
- Method of submission is to submit your entry form via the link: MONIN NZ Coffee Creativity Cup 2025 entry
- In this entry you must provide a brief description about your drink, the drink recipe, and a video of less than 2 minutes showing you making the drink.
- Contestants agree that video submissions may be used by MONIN NZ (Moi Agencies) for promotional purposes during and after the promotional event.
- The top 4 videos will be chosen by the promoter, at their sole discretion, to compete in the MONIN Creative Coffee Cup Final event.
5. FINALS EVENT – NZ
- The NZ finals event will be held in Auckland on Saturday 12th April, 2025. The main event will be used to determine the winner, second, and third place
- It is a single round coffee mocktail competition for all contestants, judged by industry experts
- Any additional rounds may be added and is up to the discretion of the local event organisers
- We will use the competition timing for the Asia Pacific Finals for the NZ competition
- Contestants must be available to attend that event at that date and time, all costs incurred in attending the event are at the expense of the contestant.
6. COMPETITION TIMING – Asia Pacific Final
Below is the competition timing for the Asia Pacific regional finals. Each contestant will be given 30 minutes for the presentation of their mocktails.
Pre-Stage Area : 30 Minutes
Preparation / Setup Time : 15 Minutes
Presentation Time : 10 Minutes
Clean-Up Time : 5 Minutes

7. RESULTS
- The local organisers are responsible for collecting, managing, and calculating the results
- Winners are determined by a combination of the score sheet and the judge’s evaluation
- We will contact the winner directly by phone call to tell them of the result. The
results will be published on our social media channels.
8. CRITERIA FOR CONTESTANTS
These are the criteria that each contestant must follow to be eligible to participate and win MCCC.
- Contestants must currently be employed by a restaurant, bar or a food and beverage establishment in New Zealand and must work at least two shifts per week.
- Contestants must be at least 18 years old (there is no maximum age limit)
- Contestants must be able to present their presentation in English for the Asia Pacific regional finals – penalties would not apply for any pronunciation or grammatical errors
- The decision to penalise contestants for their presentation is at the discretion of the judges and event organisers
- Contestants must submit all required registration information and recipes to the local event organisers by the local organiser’s designated deadline
- Contestants must agree to MONIN reserving the rights to use the contestant’s recipes, photos and videos for marketing and public relations purposes
- Contestants must provide and be responsible for their own ingredients, glassware, vessels, equipment and other items they deem necessary with the exception of an espresso machine, grinder, coffee beans (optional, if the contestant does not bring their own) and MONIN products, which would be provided at the Asia Pacific finals)
- The order in which the contestants compete will be fairly and transparently determined by the local event organisers
9. CRITERIA FOR RECIPES
These are the criteria that every contestant must follow when submitting their recipes.
- Contestants must make four (4) full portion drinks
- Three (3) for the judges to share and one (1) for photos and display
- Recipes must include a minimum of 10mls of one (1) MONIN product
- This can be anything from the MONIN range (Le Sirop de MONIN, Le Fruit de MONIN, La Sauce de MONIN)
- Contestants are permitted to use multiple MONIN products in one (1) recipe
- Contestants must use at least one shot of espresso coffee i. An espresso is a beverage made from ground coffee, poured from one (1) side of a double portafilter in one (1) continuous extraction
- Extraction time within 3 seconds is recommended, but not mandatory iii. The estimated yield should be around 30ml or one (1) ounce iv. The espresso may be served hot or cold
- The espresso must be extracted during the contestants presentation time
- For the Asia Pacific finals, contestants must use espressos extracted from the provided machine and grinder
- The following products would be provided by the event organisers of the Asia Pacific finals i. The espresso machine ii. The grinder iii. The coffee beans (optional, if the contestant does not bring their own), and iv. MONIN products
- Contestants are permitted to bring and use their own coffee beans (contestants must include bean calibration into their set up time)
- Homemade ingredients are permitted but may not conflict with any available MONIN products (e.g. no homemade syrups, purees, frappes, sauces and such)
- No alcohol is permitted
- Contestants may use any edible ingredients in their recipe from any brand not competing with MONIN (i.e. syrups, purees, frappes, sauces and such)
- There is no limit to the number of ingredients or quantities
- All ingredients must be safe to consume (apart from thematic garnishes)
- Garnishes must be prepared before the commencement of the contestant’s presentation
- Garnishes must be consistent with the drink or the theme of the competition and may not be offensive in any way
- Any garnishes that are deemed unacceptable, inappropriate or inconsistent with the theme, rules and regulations by either the judges and/or the event organisers, may be asked to be removed, replaced or the contestant may be disqualified
- Contestants may bring a maximum of two (2) additional pieces of electronic equipment for their presentation and must inform the event organisers at least 48 hours before the event
10. REJECTIONS, PENALTIES AND DISQUALIFICATIONS
Local event organisers may reject any contestant, contestant’s recipe, or any recipe name if the event organisers consider any of those aspects unacceptable, inappropriate, or inconsistent with the theme, rules and regulations. Points may be deducted, or contestants may be disqualified if:
- There are changes to their submitted recipe
- Contestants are tardy
- Contestants go over time (one (1) point would be deducted for every second over time, up to a maximum of 100 points)
- Contestants do not clean the presentation area for the next contestant
- Contestants are disrespectful to other contestants, judges, event organisers, venue staff and/or members of the audience
- Contestants are not representing themselves, their communities or their respective schools and/or workplace in the best possible light
- Local event organisers are responsible for managing and determining these rejections, penalties and disqualifications
- Local event organisers have final say on the above rejections, penalties and disqualification
11. CODE OF CONDUCT FOR ALL
- Everyone is expected to behave ethically, honestly and with integrity
- Respect fellow judges, competitors, volunteers and staff at all times
- Everyone will be honest in their behaviour and will respect the rights, opinions, and culture of all others involved in the competition
- Everyone must represent their brand, company and/or organisation well
- Everyone, especially contestants and judges are encouraged to exchange information and knowledge to advance the barista craft as a whole
- Everyone is expected to be devoted to seeking drink excellence
This is the expected code of conduct for everyone participating and involved in the MCCC competition. This includes contestants, judges, event organisers, spectators and venue/third party support staff.
